Interactive Whiteboard or Projector to display your computer screen
Teacher Pre-Screened Websites on Topic List
Informational Book on each topic for the chosen list
PowerPoint
Printed Copies of the Quiz

Teaching Strategies:
To introduce Copyright and Fair Use to our youngest students, I propose doing it in a Whole Group manner.  This lesson is Teacher Directed but includes a lot of Interactive Learning through websites and building a PowerPoint slideshow together.

Learning Activities:
Whole Group - Write a report in the form of a PowerPoint Presentation
-Slide One - Title
-Slide Two, Three, Four - Information
-Slide Five - Credits

1. Have the class choose from teacher selected topics that can be researched at the Smithsonian Website.  (Teacher, search websites ahead of time that are kid friendly to be used for research also gather a book on each topic.)
Examples: Elephants, Volcanoes, Cheetahs...
2. Explain that you will be writing information about your class topic together.  You will be researching to gather information, but before research can begin they need to understand what information they are allowed to use and how they are allowed to use it.  Most of the information they will find is copyrighted which means it is someone else's idea and we must have permission to use it.  There is something called Fair Use that allows us to fairly use content for educational purposes in school.
3. Visit the site Cyberbee Interactive Tool
4. Invite the children up to the Interactive Whiteboard or Computer to answer the questions about Copyright and Fair Use.
5. Visit pre-screened websites and gather a book on each topic to find information.
6. Start building your PowerPoint report by:
-Creating a Title Slide... What Are ____________?
-Helping the children put the content in their own words for the three informational slides in the report.
-Use the pre-screened website and the informational book.
-Show them how to credit the sources of the information.
7. Ask the children where they might get pictures for their slides.  Talk about how to get permission to use pictures and how to site the sources.  Settle on using pictures from the Smithsonian Website reminding them that the Smithsonian Website grants students permission to use their photographs for school reports and projects.
8. View your final report as a slideshow.

Assessment:
